More than 200,000 children are separated from their families every year as a result of war or emergency situations, exposing them to violence, exploitation or abuse, warned UNICEF Portugal, which called on authorities to strengthen protection for these minors.
The UN children’s organization in a statement said there was “growing concern” about children believed to be alone and warned of an urgent need to protect and reunite them with their families.
“In virtually all situations of conflict, natural disasters, mass displacement and other crises, there are children who find themselves separated or removed from their families or the care of a responsible adult,” leaving them “exposed to extreme risks of vulnerability such as abuse, exploitation or abuse ” says UNICEF Portugal.
