The former director general of the Directorate General of Revenue and Taxation (DGCI) of Guinea-Bissau was detained by the Judicial Police (PJ) on suspicion of corruption and was brought to the ministry for questioning this Monday, a judicial source told Lusa.
According to the source, the perpetrator is accused of “theft of large sums” of proceeds from a marketing campaign for cashew nuts, Guinea-Bissau’s main agricultural and export product.
The case dates back to 2023 and at that time was initiated by a complaint from DGKI employees, later confirmed by the inspection services of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The suspect was arrested on Friday by the National Unit for Combating Economic Crimes of the SP (UNRDE), spending the weekend in the cells of this corporation in the Reno area of the Guinean capital, and this Monday before a judge of the Ministry of State.
PJ’s source was unable to provide the value of the public money in question.
