The Secretary General of the PCP admitted this Sunday that he is not satisfied with the loss of parliamentary representation in Madeira, considering that it will be a factor “that will have the most negative impact on political life” in the region.
“The loss of CDU representation in parliament is a factor that will have the most negative impact on the political life of the region, in particular on the defense of the interests of the people and workers of the region,” Paulo Raimundo said in a statement at the PCP’s national headquarters in Lisbon.
According to the communist leader, “variation factors related to what was at stake in the regional elections themselves, the circumstances in which the elections were held” influenced the CDU’s result – with the dissolution of the regional assembly and the calling of elections by the president. Republic – this meant that “aspects related to disintegration” took precedence over political assessment.
“These circumstances were taken advantage of by the PSD to turn itself into a victim, thereby stopping an even greater decline than the one that occurred, and were also used by other political forces to artificially inflate differences and hide the convergences that they actually have with the politician,” which was and which continues,” he said.
The general secretary of the PKP said that the majority obtained by the PSD was “negative for the interests of the people and the workers,” considering that its result was “inseparable from the use of state instruments and money, as well as from the position of the regional government.” create conditions for voters, seeking to hide the injustice, inequality, exploitation and impoverishment that characterize their political actions.”
“Even while trying to play the victim in the face of illegal and harmful practices that have been revealed during the ongoing investigation and which have led to calls for early elections,” he stressed.
Regarding other political forces, the communist leader believed that his result “is mainly due to his propaganda and projection in the media of his demagogic and populist message, as well as the instrumentalization of just feelings of discontent and rebellion, (…) which includes the promotion AKP in a demagogic and populist sense.”
On the contrary, the leader of the PKP argued that “in the creation of the CDU we had to face huge inequalities in means, discrimination and evaluations”, and emphasized that there was an “exaggeration” of the AKP, the growth of which eventually led to almost all parties reducing their voice.
Asked whether he thought the CDU’s result was because it had not clearly shown whether it was intelligible, Paulo Raimundo said the coalition “did not want to have false expectations.”
“The alternative imposed on Madeira does not involve cosmetic fixes, it involves fundamental policies that change the course of politics,” he stressed.
Already answering the question of how he sees the future of the Madeira region, with the difficulty of reaching mutual understanding, Paulo Raimundo stressed that what worries the PCP most is that “regardless of the agreements that can be reached”, the political options that will be implemented “are those that make Madeira one of the most unequal and most unjust regions.”
“Unfortunately, there is no majority that would allow us to see a better future for the people of Madeira. This is what worries us,” he said.
With 100% of the votes counted, the HDZ received 1.63% of the votes in the regional elections in Madeira, failing to elect a single deputy.
In the last elections in Madeira in September 2023, the HDZ received 2.72% of the vote, an increase from 1.80% in 2019, allowing it to retain its deputy in the Regional Legislative Assembly.
For the first time since 1988, the HDZ failed to elect a deputy to the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira.
