The Cannes Film Festival’s Best Actress Award goes to a transgender woman for the first time.

For the first time in history, the Cannes Film Festival awarded a transgender woman the Best Actress award at a ceremony last week.

The winner was Carla Sophia of Gascony, 52 years old. The actress starred in the Mexican musical comedy Emily Perez.

In her speech, the Spaniard especially noted the work of the team producing the film.

The choice sparked controversy, with people criticizing how “trans ideology takes from women and gives to men.” The decision also raised some eyebrows, as many pointed to 61-year-old Demi Moore as the actress best deserving of the award.

“For all the transgender people suffering from hate, this is for you,” he exclaimed in his speech.

The film, which received Gascon’s recognition, also features Selena Gomez, to whom the actress dedicated a few words. “Selena Gomez, I love you,” he said.

The speech received a standing ovation from those present at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
