The Azores government is ready to support farmers who have suffered losses due to bad weather

The Azores government will “quickly and comprehensively” assess the damage caused by bad weather in recent days and will be ready to compensate farmers according to identified losses, the chief executive said on Wednesday.

In a message sent to the editorial office, the owner of the portfolio of agriculture in the Azores, António Ventura, advises producers affected by bad weather to contact the island services of the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Food so that a technical assessment of the losses incurred can be carried out in relation to crops and infrastructure for support for agricultural activities.

The Department of Agriculture and Food says it will “conduct a rapid and comprehensive survey of the damage.”

Also, according to Antonio Ventura, the survey will be extended to all islands affected by bad weather.

“The income of farmers in all regions is always a cause for concern for the government of the Azores, but especially in the field of agricultural diversification, since bad weather of this type in many cases puts the entire harvest at risk,” it is emphasized. Antonio Ventura, quoted in footnote.

On Tuesday, the Agricultural Association of San Miguel (AASM) asked the regional government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) to conduct a study on the damage caused to crops due to bad weather.

“Adverse weather conditions that have occurred in recent days, such as those recorded yesterday [segunda-feira]June 3, mainly in the north of the island, caused high losses of several crops, in particular corn, where partial and complete losses were recorded in some crops,” the ACCM press release said.

On Monday, 20 families had to be relocated in the municipality of Ribeira Grande on the island of São Miguel due to heavy rain that fell in the late afternoon and which also caused damage to vehicles, institutions and public roads, without any records. wounded.

This Wednesday, speaking to the Lusa agency, the president of the Ribeira Grande City Council, Alexandre Gaudencio, said that, according to a first estimate, losses in houses, vehicles and public property exceed half a million euros.
