Porto Alegre airport partially reopens more than two months after flooding

The main airport in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre will partially reopen to passengers after closing on May 27 due to severe flooding in southern Brazil, it was announced Wednesday.

In a statement, the operator of Salgado Filho International Airport said it would resume “boarding and disembarking” operations from Monday.

Despite this, “landings and takeoffs will continue to take place at Canoas Air Base.”

Passengers will be transported to the airbase by bus, so the operator requires passengers to arrive three hours in advance.

According to official figures released on Tuesday, flooding in the state of Rio Grande do Sul has killed 182 people, with 31 people still missing and affected 2,398,000 people in 478 of Rio Grande do Sul’s 497 municipalities.

Data cited by Agência Brasil shows that more than 626,000 people have been forced to temporarily or permanently leave their homes.

The government has already allocated around 70 billion reais (12.28 billion euros) to combat the emergency, including direct aid, loans and other forms of financial assistance.
