Iraqi authorities have executed by hanging 10 ISIS members sentenced to death for terrorism, Baghdad authorities said on Tuesday.
The executions took place at Al-Khut (“Whale”) prison in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah, where several executions have taken place in recent years, in the presence of Justice Ministry officials.
Sources linked to the government, cited by Iraqi digital newspaper Nasiriyah News Network, indicated that those sentenced to death were members of an armed group and that the sentences were ratified by the Iraqi president.
According to the same information, the convicted persons were Iraqi citizens.
On Sunday, another Iraqi court sentenced to death eight people accused of involvement in the 2015 “suicide bombers” who carried out twin attacks in Baghdad that ISIS claimed responsibility for.
The suicide bomber’s attack left 20 people dead and dozens injured.
In recent years, Iraqi courts have sentenced hundreds of people to death, dozens of whom were executed for membership in ISIS, the radical militant group that has taken control of large swathes of Iraq and Syria.
Several human rights groups have accused Iraqi authorities of “violations” in trials and of facilitating trials “without guarantees” to sentence defendants to death.
