Nigeria’s 100m champion Favour Ofili will fail to compete in the hectometer at the 2024 Paris Olympics because her national federation forgot to register her, she wrote on Wednesday.
“It is with great regret that I have been told that I will not be competing in the 100m at these Olympics,” wrote the young 21-year-old sprinter, whose best time in the distance is 10.93 seconds, whose qualifying round begins Friday at the fair.
Favour Ofili has been registered in the 200m and 4x100m relay at Paris 2024 after failing to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Games three years ago due to Nigeria failing to carry out the minimum number of anti-doping tests on some athletes as required by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).
In a statement, Nigerian Sports Minister John Enoch said he had received assurances from the local federation, which had sent the athlete’s registration to the Olympic Committee for three events, pending an explanation of what had happened.
Ofili is one of 56 athletes who qualified for the 100m, finishing 26th and second to last among those who made the minimum (11.07 seconds), with a time of 11.06 seconds achieved on June 16.
