Russia has released Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan as part of a prisoner swap deal with the United States.
The agreement between the countries involved 24 prisoners and at least six countries, and came after months of high-level negotiations among the governments of the United States, Russia and Germany, whose prisoner, Russian killer Vadim Krasikov, was the centerpiece of the agreement.
Reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested in late March 2023 while reporting in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg. Paul Whelan was arrested in 2018 in Moscow.
The prisoners landed in Turkey on Thursday afternoon, W reported.allStreetJournal.
The Kremlin has declined to comment on the upcoming prisoner exchange between Russia and the United States.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said he had “no comments on this matter.”
