The Levada de Agua de Alto in the municipality of Santana, where a young Spanish woman died and two others were injured in a landslide on Friday, is not a recommended route, but is in high demand by tourists, the mayor said.
“It’s a trail, a levada, like many others that exist, that is not marked as a recommended route. It is essentially used to transport water for agriculture, and the cleaning is done, in fact, to ensure the circulation of water in the levada,” explained Dinarte Fernandez.
In an interview with Lusa, the mayor explained that the levada supplies irrigation water to the parish of Faial, one of six that make up the municipality of Santana, in the north of the island of Madeira, and is the only one in the area.
