Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who won her first Oscar tonight at the age of 64 for her role in Everything and Everywhere at Once, called for more gender equality in Hollywood and more women nominated in all categories.
“Obviously, I would like to see a lot more women nominated, so that there is gender parity in all areas, in all categories,” the actress said in a backstage room for an interview at the Oscars. “We are not close to that yet,” he said.
Jamie Lee Curtis thought it “surreal” to be among the nominees and win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Deirdre Beaubeirdra, which had already earned her an award from the Screeners Guild.
The actress said the issue of diversity and inclusion needs a wider discussion: “How do you include everyone when we have a binary choice,” she said, recalling that she has a transgender daughter.
“But I’m afraid that removing gender from the category will reduce opportunities for more women, which I’m also working on,” she said.
“It’s a difficult question, but I think the most important thing is inclusion and more women,” she continued. “More women everywhere, anytime, all the same time,” he said, referring to the title of the film that won him an Oscar tonight in Los Angeles and made history at the ceremony.
The topic of diversity was raised several times backstage at the evening, where the winners went to answer journalists’ questions. Oscar winners for Best Documentary Short Film Talking to Elephants Kartik Gonçalves and Gunit Monga also addressed the issue.
