Banco de Portugal Governor Mario Centeno said this Wednesday that the central bank is entering a phase of negative results due to higher interest rates affecting the central bank’s results.
“[Em 2023, o resultado] it will not have the same sign as in 2022. The bank is entering a phase of negative results, the size of which depends on the decisions made,” said Mario Centeno, meaning that these results will not “minimally” affect the capacity for action of the institution.

Since 2018, when it made a record profit of 806 million euros, Banco de Portugal’s results have gradually declined. Dividends paid to the state for 2022 amounted to 238 million euros minus 41%.
