The need for Irish neutrality must be discussed, Irish Deputy Prime Minister Michol Martin said at the International Security Advisory Forum on May 18, The Journal writes.
“I have said before that our policy of military neutrality can and should be an important part of the discussion at the Forum, but equally these issues should not be reduced to a simplistic binary option.”, said Martín at the opening of the forum. According to him, neutrality is not a “good luck charm” and joining NATO is not the only alternative to neutrality.
According to Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister, a neutral position does not protect the country from invasions by “rogue” states. He noted that Ireland is negotiating a renewed partnership framework with NATO.
Martin also noted that as an island nation, Ireland used to be quite safer, but this position also carries specific risks and threats.
According to the newspaper, this view is opposed by the Sinn Fein party, which believes that Ireland should remain a neutral state.
Recall that the Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly expressed doubts about Ireland’s neutral status, especially after the country joined the European mission to train the military for the Kiev regime.
