64 village heads from the Beboni canton, located in the Nia department, were called up on May 19, 2023 by military personnel on a mission to Bebegia, Alwihdainfo reports on May 21.
The Bebegija city demilitarization mission accused the heads of the Beboni canton of having 20 firearms each. During a meeting between the soldiers and 64 village heads, in the presence of the head of the Beboni canton, they were asked questions about gun ownership in his canton. The head of Beboni canton, Samingar Keseli, supported his position, saying that there were no weapons in his canton and that he could not take responsibility for this case.
In preparation for the celebration of the confirmation of believers in the canton of Beboni, the parish priest of Notre-Dame de l’Assompción de Bebeguia, on the way to the event, met with the village elders who are part of his community. He then returned to attend a meeting with his followers. Reflexively, he tried to take a photograph, but was intercepted by soldiers who severely beat him with their gun butts.
During the meeting, he was arrested, beaten and taken into custody at the former prefectural head’s premises, which had been converted into a holding cell. His phone was broken by the military.
