According to Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi, a preliminary investigation points to the possibility that the driver deliberately crashed into security barriers. Guglielmi also confirmed that there were no reports of injuries.
Chris Zaboji, who witnessed the collision, said that after hitting the barriers, the driver crashed a second time. Zaboji said he was walking home when he heard the roar.
The President of the United States met with Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy at the White House on Monday night, and there is no information about whether he was in the White House at the time of the incident.
A hotel in the area was evacuated at the request of the security services, and traffic on some nearby roads was blocked.
The alert was raised at 9:40 p.m. local time (2:40 a.m. in Lisbon) for what was called a “suspicious package” investigation, according to a Washington fire department spokesman.
