Iran said this Friday that it does not recognize an independent mission authorized by the UN to investigate possible violations of fundamental freedoms in protests sparked after the September death of young Mahsa Amini.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the creation of any mechanism to investigate the events of the past two months in Iran unnecessary and a violation of national sovereignty and does not recognize the mission created for this purpose,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.
The UN Human Rights Council approved on Thursday the creation of an independent investigative mission to “gather and analyze evidence” of human rights violations in the crackdown, which has already killed more than 300 people, including 40 children, and nearly 15,000 detainees.
