Algerian president wants more commercial partnership with Portugal

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune defended strengthening trade relations with Portugal through partnership on Tuesday in Lisbon and invited his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebela de Sousa to make an official visit to the country “as soon as possible”.

Tebbun, who began an official two-day visit to Portugal on Tuesday, spoke at the end of his meeting with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and expressed satisfaction that Algeria and Portugal agree “on all international issues.”

“We talked about Libya, Mali, Sahel, Palestine, Western Sahara, Ukraine and what is happening with brotherly Russia. We agreed on all issues,” Tebbun said following the head of the Portuguese state in a speech that preceded his speech. An Algerian colleague who criticized the invasion of Russia (Algeria has strong political, economic and diplomatic relations with Moscow) and expressed support for Kyiv.

“We agree on several topics that were discussed today [terça-feira]. Like Portugal, Algeria is also looking for peace. We want to solve the issue of Western Sahara,” Tebbun added after the Portuguese President had already expressed support for the UN efforts to hold a referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara, whose liberation movement, the Polisario Front, supports Algeria. .

However, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said nothing about the autonomy proposal for Western Sahara presented by Morocco, contrary to what appeared in the joint communiqué of the recent 14th ministerial meeting of the Portugal/Morocco Mixed Commission, held on 12 May in Lisbon. the Government of Portugal expressed support for both proposals.

Tebbun, according to Arabic-Portuguese translation services, also confirmed Algeria’s support for building a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

“There is not a single point on which we have disagreements. There are no disagreements in the international situation, in terms of development,” he insisted.

With regard to bilateral relations, Tebbun reaffirmed the common will to renew the protocols of friendship and cooperation signed in 2005.

“The dialogue with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was honest, open and reflected the depth of our economic relations, which in the future are intended to create greater partnerships in various sectors such as culture, education, energy, technology, smart economy, digital technologies and others,” – added the head of the Algerian state.

“We want to create partnerships not only based on oil,” Tebbun emphasized.

Tebbun’s visit follows the 6th meeting of the Joint Working Group on Portuguese-Algerian Economic Cooperation in Algiers last week, where the Portuguese Minister of Economy and Maritime Affairs, António Costa Silva, expressed Portugal’s desire to quintuple its investment in Algeria over the next five years. .

As the Algerian press reported at the time, Costa Silva said that Algeria “is a fundamental and reliable partner in an increasingly unstable world at an economic and geopolitical level” and that Portugal intends to increase and diversify investments in Algeria in various fields of activity. such as public works, finance, industry, pharmaceuticals, hydraulics, agriculture, energy, and transportation.

Also on the occasion, Algiers Agency for Investment Promotion (AAPI) CEO Omar Reccache noted that Portuguese investment in Algeria “continues to decline” and that “this is far from reflecting the excellence of bilateral relations” and “the deep bonds of friendship that unite the two countries”.

Until 2022, there were only eight Portuguese investment projects, although there are about 80 Portuguese companies operating in Algeria, mostly in strategic sectors.

Algeria is now pushing for some Portuguese investment in the agri-food and processing industries, and the need to strengthen commercial momentum with Portugal by increasing trade, which is around 450 million euros, a volume that Algeria and Lisbon admit is “below existing potential between the two countries.

Algeria is Portugal’s most important energy supplier, covering 40% of its annual demand.

On Tuesday afternoon, the President of Algeria paid a visit to the Lisbon City Council, where Mayor Carlos Moedas will present the keys to the city, and will end the first day of the official trip to Portugal with an official dinner hosted by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at the Ajuda National Palace.

On Wednesday, the second and final day of the visit, Tebbun will attend the Portugal/Algeria Economic Forum, an event organized by the Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade (AICEP), and later hold separate meetings with the Portuguese Prime Minister. , António Costa and President of the Parliament Augusto Santos Silva.
