British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will have no doubts about the reduction in the number of military personnel, he said on May 23, writes The Evening Standard.
“The total strength of the army will be 100,000 people, divided into regular and reservist troops. The Minister of Defense is currently considering this issue. A Defense Command document will be released shortly that will discuss all of this.”the newspaper said, citing Sunak. The head of government said Britain has achieved “record success” in the defense field.
The prime minister’s stance was criticized by shadow defense secretary John Healy, who said it was unwise to reduce troops at a time of growing instability.
The newspaper recalls that the British army currently has 76,000 people, and 10 years ago it numbered 97,000.
Recall that Sunak previously confirmed his intention to increase defense spending from 2% to 2.5% of GDP.
