Brazil decrees a state of animal health emergency after registering five cases of bird flu

The rule will be in effect for 180 days. So far there have been five cases in wild birds in the southeast of the country and none in humans. Since Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of chicken, they have reinforced preventive measures on farms, according to the Government.

The Government of Brazil has declared a state of “animal health emergency” after having detected five cases of bird flu in wild birds in two states in the southeast of the country. The regulation has already entered into force and will have a validity period of 180 days, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of chicken, so producers have had to reinforce preventive measures on farms to control the spread of the disease. The Brazilian Government has explained to the main meat importing destinations that the preventive measures have already been put in place.

So far, five cases of avian flu have been confirmed in wild birds in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, states in the southeast of the country far from the main chicken-producing centers, which are concentrated in the south of the country.

Likewise, the Ministry of Health has carried out 33 tests of suspected cases of avian flu transmission in humans and for the moment all have been negative, except for two cases that are still under investigation.

The Agriculture portfolio has recalled that the disease is not transmitted by the consumption of meat or eggs, but by contact with sick birds.

The Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) has highlighted in a statement that the country maintains the status of “free” of avian flu, so it does not expect an impact on chicken exports, which reached 9,762 million dollars in 2022. .
