Domingos Pereira, the former deputy mayor of Barcelos, who recently suspended his mandate after being convicted of corruption, is charged again, this time with the crime of evasion. The former head of the municipality is accused of supporting a businessman friend in a tender to replace gas discharge lamps with LED ones.
In addition to Domingos Pereira, Alexandre Maciel, former councilor of the same municipality, businessman José Pereira and two employees of the Chamber of Barcelos are also accused. All of them have been prosecuted for tax evasion.
Contacted morning Post, Domingos Pereira was “disgusted” by this accusation. “There is nothing here that you can accuse me of. It was a serious, clean and very, very, very transparent process,” he stressed.
Domingos Pereira classifies the prosecution’s accusation as “gloomy” and defends the other defendants: “I’m going to the fire for all these people.”
According to the prosecutor’s office, “the defendants, who maintained personal relations of friendship or common political interests, outlined a plan to secure the award of work to the company that the entrepreneur represents by instructing, conducting and deciding the procedure in violation of public procurement rules and in excess of the amount necessary to carry out the work. , to the detriment of the financial interests of the Municipality and the Energy Efficiency Fund, which co-financed 85% of the total cost of work”, which, as a result of this scheme, caused more damage to the Municipality of Barcelos and the Energy Efficiency Fund in the amount of 248 thousand euros.
