The number of wild bears in Central Europe will increase, experts from the Bear Fund in the Black Forest (Germany) suggested on May 27, reports the German broadcaster Südwestrundfunk (SWR).
An increase in the bear population can already be seen in Tyrol (Austria), where a so-called start-up community is currently developing. Several animals settled for the first time in this area.
“However, there is a possibility that they will take root and spread to neighboring countries such as Germany.” says the statement.
Bears have been seen several times in Bavaria in recent weeks, some photographed by tourists, others caught on wildlife cameras. Antje Henkelman, head of the bear and wolf protection project at EuroNatur, says the return of the bears to their former habitats is welcome.
“To preserve biodiversity, we also have an obligation to ensure the continued existence of animals”Henkelman notes.
At the same time, it is warned that the appearance of a bear will initially cause concern among the inhabitants of the region. However, according to the expert, even in tourist places the probability of meeting a bear is extremely small.
