In Angola, an average of 10 deaths are recorded daily as a result of road traffic accidents.

Angola is registering an average of 10 deaths per day in about 20 accidents per day and aims to reduce the number of traffic accidents by 50% by 2027, the chief of the national police said on Monday.

Arnaldo Manuel Carlos addressed the press at the end of the Second Extraordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Angolan President João Lourenço, which approved the National Road Traffic Prevention and Safety Plan 2023-2027.

According to the Commander-in-Chief of the National Police of Angola, road traffic accidents continue to be the second cause of death in the country after malaria, with 2,999 deaths and more than 15,000 injuries recorded in 2022 out of a total of 13,000 road traffic accidents. .

According to the official, the plan includes 29 operational goals and 146 key actions to be carried out by various ministries, including a 50% reduction in traffic accidents by 2027, which will place Angola in the “ranking” of 10 countries in Africa with the most has a low rate of road traffic accidents and is among the top five countries with the lowest death rates in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

“With the approval of this document, the executive branch intends to improve the process of training drivers of vehicles, develop a culture of road education, guarantee effective management and increase the level of safety of infrastructures, vehicles, road users, as well as improve and expand rescue and assistance services for victims of an air crash,” – said the commander in chief.

Regarding traffic accidents in the country, Arnaldo Manuel Carlos mentioned that on average there are 18 to 20 accidents per day and 5 to 10 deaths per day, which is two to three times more than in the case of ordinary crimes.

“When, for example, five murders are recorded, for example, 20 deaths from road accidents, the picture is not good, it is quite alarming,” he stressed.

According to Manuel Carlos, “in terms of road traffic accidents, the picture is far from favorable,” stressing that the nearly 3,000 deaths recorded in 2022 do not include injuries that could have led to death.

Among the main causes of traffic accidents is a collision with pedestrians due to the inattention of drivers and the lack of road education among passers-by in general, the head of the National Police pointed out, also noting the poor condition of roads and vehicles, among other factors.
