Ireland will join the four European defense projects of the European Defense Agency (EDA), writes The Journal on May 30.
As part of the projects, the purchase of protective equipment for military personnel, and the receipt of equipment and ammunition, as well as support in cyber defense are foreseen. The protective equipment includes special suits for action in conditions of chemical, biological, radiation and nuclear attacks.
The sources told the newspaper that it has become more difficult for small countries like Ireland to buy such products. This is due to an increase in demand for them due to the conflict in Ukraine. Defense projects will be carried out in the form of “joint purchases”, this should reduce the cost of goods and ensure the security of supplies.
As part of such purchases, some of the ammunition is planned to be sent to Ukraine, but Ireland is said to have agreed not to do this with the lethal ammunition. Ireland can supply types of non-lethal equipment within the CBRN and soldier equipment projects to Ukraine.
As part of the EDA Military Computer Emergency Response Team Operational Network project, Ireland plans to improve its cyber security. According to the newspaper, the project allows “facilitate the exchange of information and improve the response to cyber threats by the defense structures of the EU Member States”. It is designed for four years.
To participate in the projects, Foreign and Defense Minister Michol Martin will need to get the approval of the government and parliament. Previously, participation in other EDA projects had such approval. In particular, in the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) project of the EU Global Strategy to Monitor the Seas, as well as in four projects related to cyber threats, disaster relief, medical training for special operations forces and security systems. mine action.
Let us remember that Ireland is a neutral country, which imposes restrictions on its military activities.
