A member of the Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s ideological army, was shot dead this Monday in Isfahan, in the center of the country, a local deputy governor said, quoted by Iranian state news agency IRNA.
Mohammad Reza Jannessari, without providing further details, indicated that a member of the security forces had been killed in an armed attack by unknown assailants and that an investigation had already been launched to identify those responsible.
In mid-November, in Isfahan, two unidentified men on a motorcycle fired automatic weapons at local security forces, killing a police colonel and two paramilitaries.
Monday’s attack came at a time when a wave of protests rocked the Islamic Republic of Iran following the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, three days after being arrested by the vice police for violating Iran’s strict dress code.
Dozens of people, mostly demonstrators but also members of the security forces, have been killed since the protest began, according to authorities.
Since the protests began, at least 426 people have been killed and more than 17,400 arrested, according to Human Rights Defenders in Iran, a group that monitors the ongoing protest movement, which also said at least 55 Iranian security forces have also been killed. .
