Mozambique police announced Thursday the arrest of a Portuguese and Zimbabwean man who had 32 weapons and various ammunition hidden in an apartment building in the central suburb of Chimoio, a corporate source told Lusa.
The suspects were found in possession of 10 combat pistols, nine shotguns, three assault rifles, more than 200 pieces of ammunition, including an AKM assault rifle, bayonets, 10 air pistols, as well as 53 communication radios and body armor, Mateusz Mindu said. Manica provincial police officer.
The military materials were hidden in the rented house where the two detainees lived, in the upper middle-class area of Chimoyo.
He added that the police are continuing to investigate the origin and destination of the weapons and ammunition.
“The material was seized and is in the possession of the police because it has no documents and was brought into the country illegally,” Mateusz Mindu explained, stressing that it looks new and unused.
Police, Mindu added, are also investigating whether the materials will be used to supply the armed groups that have been attacking northern Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province since 2017.
The list of seized material also includes three javelins and two video cameras.
