Tens of thousands of Israelis gathered to protest plans to reform the judiciary by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition, the most right-wing in Israeli history, on June 3, the Associated Press reported.
The weekly protests are now in their 22nd week, despite Netanyahu’s announcement in March that the controversial legal proposals were shelved.
Several demonstrations took place across Israel, with the main protest gathering tens of thousands of people in the country’s central city, Tel Aviv.
Protesters waved Israeli flags, lit torches and beat drums.
The plan would weaken the judiciary and limit judicial review of laws and government decisions, which critics say poses a direct threat to civil rights and the rights of minorities and marginalized groups.
The protests continue despite negotiations between the government and the opposition to reach an agreement on the plan.
