The Tanzanian government intends to increase cashew processing capacity to 60% by 2025-2026, the Tanzanian Daily News reported on November 29.
Only 10 percent of the cashews harvested in Tanzania are currently processed in the country, according to Jeffrey Mkamilo, director general of the Tanzania Institute of Agricultural Research.
Mkamilo noted that to achieve this goal, large-scale reforms are needed to increase cashew processing locally. It is necessary to build local processing plants, as well as the introduction of new technologies to ensure processing efficiency.
Efforts are also underway to increase raw cashew production from 300,000 tonnes to 700,000 by 2025 to ensure cashews are available for domestic processing.
