On Monday, the NATO Secretary General acknowledged that Europe must be ready to take in more refugees from Ukraine, arguing that Russia is targeting critical infrastructure in the country to cause “the greatest possible suffering.”
“Of course, we must be prepared for more refugees to cross the rest of Europe. This is a war, this is a brutal war, and this is a deliberate attack on critical services: heating, electricity, water, gas. And, of course, the purpose of this is to inflict as much suffering on the Ukrainian civilian population as possible in order to try to break their commitment and their unity against the Russian invasion,” said Jens Stoltenberg.
The NATO Secretary General spoke to reporters at the entrance to a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, NATO’s main political decision-making body, which will bring together foreign ministers on Monday and Wednesday at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest, Romania’s capital. .
