On Monday, the French public ministry said it hoped to identify the attackers of an eight-year-old Marseille fan with a brain tumor during a change of fans in Marseille’s football match against Ajaccio.
“The investigation is starting,” said Nicolas Septe, prosecutor for Ajaccio on the island of Corsica.
The priority is to collect testimony from Kenzo’s family and the child himself, as well as other witnesses, and use CCTV footage to identify the three or four attackers who are believed to be responsible for the crime.
The case “shocked” the country and brought renewed attention to the violence in and around football in France, even leading to President Emmanuel Macron’s request for “strong sanctions”.
Kenzo and his family traveled to Corsica to fulfill a dream of watching Marseille play live for the first time, in this case the last day of the 2022/23 French league, being surprised by a group of opposing fans for wearing Marseille’s colours.
In a game that Ajaccio, already relegated, won 1-0, four people were hospitalized with injuries caused by collisions, the case of Kenzo went viral, whose shirt was torn off to burn it, in addition to being pushed and hit father.
The Corsican club called the aggression a “disgrace” that “even stupidity cannot justify” and Sports Minister Amélie Oudea-Castera took the side of the family against the “absolutely unbearable violence”.
