Law enforcement sources said a man in his 60s died on Monday after drowning in the Mondego River in Coimbra.
A source from the sub-regional command of the Coimbra region told the Lusa news agency that a missing person was reported on the Mondego River at 21:07.
He added that the body was found and pronounced dead on the spot by an emergency medical and resuscitation doctor (VMER).
The head of the Coimbra Sapadores fire department, João Paiva, told Notícias de Coimbra that the body of a man between the ages of 60 and 65 was discovered at 21:33.
According to a witness, the man disappeared into the Mondego River between Ponte de Santa Clara and Cais do Basofias, the same source added.
Units of the Sapadores firefighters, volunteer firefighters from Coimbra and the Red Cross, as well as 26 operatives, supported by eight vehicles and a boat, were on site.
