The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) closed 256 investigations in 2022, two of them in Portugal, and managed to prevent the loss of almost 200 million euros, it announced on Tuesday.
OLAF announced in a statement that it opened 192 investigations in the last year and closed 256 investigations during 2022 at European Union (EU) and national level.
“In 2022, exceptional efforts were made to complete a significant number of investigations that were affected by the pandemic period. The 256 closed cases involved €624 million in EU taxpayer money,” the institution added.
The cabinet recommended a refund of 426.8 million euros and managed to “prevent the loss of 197.9 million euros from the EU budget.”
With regard to Portugal, OLAF launched three investigations and completed two investigations with recommendations.
Hungary was the country with the most investigations (15).
