Flooding in 24 settlements after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam

Partial destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine has already flooded 24 settlements, and about a thousand civilians have been evacuated from the area, Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said on Tuesday.

“At this stage, 24 settlements have been flooded in Ukraine. The Interior Ministry has already evacuated about 1,000 people. [das zonas afetadas] continues,” Klymenko told Ukrainian television, according to the French news agency AFP.

Earlier, Ukrainian authorities said the floods could affect 26,000 people in 80 communities.

The Google Maps application is already pointing to floods in the Kherson area, where the dam is located.

Kyiv and Moscow accused each other of destroying the dam.

Russia lost control of part of the Kherson region during the Ukrainian counteroffensive in October and now controls only the left bank of the Dnieper.

Kherson is one of four regions annexed by Russia in September, seven months after its invasion of Ukraine.

At the same time, Moscow declared Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporozhye regions, where the largest nuclear power plant in Europe is located, to be annexed.

Russia had already occupied and annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014.

Ukraine and the international community as a whole do not recognize Russian sovereignty in the five annexed regions.

The conflict in Ukraine plunged Europe into the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

Information about the course of the war released by the two sides cannot be immediately verified by independent sources.
