Russian authorities today warned residents of areas affected by the partial destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine of the danger of catastrophic floods.
In the message of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, the population is recommended to collect the necessary personal belongings, documents, food for three days and drinking water.
The ministry also asked the public to turn off gas and water, as well as to go to gathering places, which were reported by local authorities.
“There is a threat of catastrophic flooding of the territories of the Novokakhovsk urban district, the Golopristansky municipal district and the Aleshkensky municipal district,” the report cited by the official Russian TASS agency as saying.
The Russian-installed authorities in the Kherson region said the local government and the Emergencies Ministry were preparing a “planned evacuation” of the population.
They also assured that they control the situation in the regions of the left bank of the Dnieper.
Both structures “urge residents to remain calm, not to panic and not to trust information coming from unverified sources,” the local Russian authorities said in a message on the Telegram social network.
“All residents will receive the necessary assistance in full: Russia does not abandon its own,” they added.
Kherson, where the Kakhovka Dam is located, is one of four regions of Ukraine that Moscow annexed to the territory of the Russian Federation on September 20, 2022, seven months after invading the neighboring country.
In addition to Kherson, Moscow annexed the Donetsk, Lugansk and Zaporozhye regions after doing the same with the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014.
Ukraine and the wider international community do not recognize the annexations.
Russia and Ukraine accused each other of destroying the dam.
