A well-known Chinese influencer nicknamed Zhongyuanhuangge died last week during a live webcast in which he drank a liter of rice brandy (baijiu) in twenty seconds, local press reported today.
According to Chinese media reports, the death of a 26-year-old man who lived in the central province of Henan and whose account was closed, occurred on June 2.
Zhongyuanhuang’s transmissions were popularized by the extreme acts he performed, such as opening a coconut with his bare hands or eating large amounts of dried chili peppers.
In one video in which he drank a bottle of baijiu in one gulp, a young man set fire to the liquid to demonstrate the high alcohol content of traditional Chinese cognac, which reaches over 60 percent.
In September last year, Chinese authorities released new rules for online streaming that require live broadcasts to be broadcast with a delay in order to follow the comments.
A few months earlier, regulators issued a code of conduct with 31 “bad habits” that “influencers” should avoid, including slandering a country’s culture, historical figures or national heroes and urging them to avoid promoting topics deemed sensitive.
