The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) predicts rain, thunderstorms and strong winds until next Friday. Weather conditions should begin to worsen from noon this Wednesday, with heavy rainfall, occasional periods of hail and thunderstorms in the north of the country.
Taking into account the weather scenario, IPMA warns of the possibility of flooding of urban areas, floods, slope instability, landslides, landslides, dragging loose objects onto the roadway, separation of movable or poorly secured structures, slippery road surfaces and the formation of groundwater.
In this sense, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) issued an appeal to the public to behave appropriately in a statement that also disclosed the preventive measures that the public should take into account.
Find out about the preventive measures recommended by Civil Protection:
− Ensure that storm sewer systems are unobstructed and that aggregates and other objects that may drag or obstruct the free flow of water be removed;
– ensure that loose structures such as scaffolding, billboards and other suspended structures are properly secured;
– Take special care when moving and staying near forest areas, considering the possibility of falling branches and trees due to strong winds;
− take special care when moving along coastal areas, historically most vulnerable to flooding phenomena, avoiding circulation and parking in these places;
− shift to defensive driving by slowing down and being especially careful if aquifers are likely to form on the roads;
− Do not cross flooded areas to avoid drawing people or vehicles into potholes in the pavement or open drains;
– Do not engage in activities related to the sea, namely sport fishing, water sports and walks on the sea, and avoid parking vehicles very close to the shore;
− Pay attention to weather information and instructions from civil protection and security forces.
