At least four children and one adult were injured in a stabbing attack on a playground in the French city of Annecy on Thursday. The attacker, a citizen of Syria, was detained on the spot.
The children were between 22 months and three years old, according to French police cited by Reuters. Local press reports that two of the injured children and an adult are at risk of dying. Two other children received minor injuries.
The attacker has legal refugee status in France, a police official told Reuters.
Some witnesses stated that at least one of the children injured in the attack was in a pram. “He jumped up (to the playground), started screaming, and then went to the strollers, stabbing the kids several times,” the witness said.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirms “several injuries” via a Twitter post and clarifies that the assailant was only arrested “due to very prompt police intervention”.
French President Emmanuel Macron denounces an act of “absolute cowardice” that has made “the nation [francesa] I’m shocked”. “Our thoughts are with them, their families and the emergency services,” he tweeted.
