The icon of the “Holy Trinity” by Andrei Rublev from the Cathedral of Christ the Savior will be restored on a long-term basis at the All-Russian Art Restoration and Research Center named after academician IE Grabar. This was announced by the Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova on June 9 in an interview with Izvestia.
“The icon will go to the restoration of the Grabar Center, a unique space where the best forces of our country are concentrated,” he said.
According to her, the experts estimated the duration of the work up to a year.
The Minister of Culture also said that they plan to make a new capsule for the icon. “more serious, even safer”than the previous one.
After restoration, the Trinity will be transferred to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra for eternal storage. At the same time, Lyubimova emphasized that the icon remains federal property and under the jurisdiction of the museum community.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to transfer the icon to the Russian Orthodox Church. Since 1929 it has been in the Tretyakov Gallery. In 2022, she was brought to the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra. “Trinity” was written by Andrei Rublev in the 15th century for this Lavra.
We also recall that representatives of the expert community spoke negatively about the transfer of the Andrei Rublev icon to the Russian Orthodox Church and plans to exhibit it in the Trinity Church.
Experts say that without special storage conditions, which can be provided only in museum conditions, there is a great risk of irreparable damage to the ancient icon and its loss.
