Three people were slightly injured when shrapnel from a drone hit a residential building in the center of the Russian city of Voronezh, near the border with Ukraine, local authorities said.
The governor of the region Alexander Gusev said that as a result of a drone strike, fragments of broken windows injured residents of the house, who were treated on the spot.
Russian media published photographs showing an apartment building with broken windows and damaged parts of the facade, the US agency AP reports.
The possible origin of the “drone” was not mentioned, but the official Russian agency TASS reported that the device flew towards the Voronezh aircraft plant and was intercepted by electronic means.
“The target of the drone attack, according to operational information, was an aircraft factory. The drone was flying in his direction,” a source in the Russian special services told TASS.
“The drone was suppressed by electronic warfare, fragments fell on a residential building,” he added.
According to specialized websites, the Voronezh Aircraft Plant is one of the largest in Europe.
Founded in 1932, it was involved in the production of some of the most important Russian aircraft, including various Antonov, Ilyushin, Kalinin or Tupolev models.
Voronezh is located about 200 kilometers northeast of Bolgorod, a Russian city close to the Ukrainian border that has come under attack in recent weeks.
The region’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said on Friday that Russian defense had shot down two air targets approaching Belgorod.
“Our air defense system worked over Belgorod. Two air targets were shot down on the way to the city, ”Gladkov said on the Telegram social network, whose words are quoted by TASS.
“The operational services are investigating the consequences on the spot,” he said, adding that, according to preliminary data, there were no casualties.
Several U.S. media outlets reported on Thursday that Ukraine was conducting a counteroffensive, but the Kyiv authorities did not confirm this information.
Ukraine blamed Russia for blowing up a dam in the country’s south on Tuesday to stop a counteroffensive, but Moscow blamed the incident on a Ukrainian attack.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 23, 2022, provoking an armed conflict that plunged Europe into the worst security crisis since World War II (1939–1945).
The balance of civilian and military casualties over more than 15 months of fighting is unknown.
Information disclosed by the two parties cannot be immediately verified independently of each other.
