In just two months, from April to June, President Lula da Silva’s approval in Brazil’s northeast, where the Brazilian president has dominated every other politician for decades, dropped 10 points, a poll released this Friday by the IPEC Institute showed.
Lula’s fall in popularity in the northeastern states is notable for far exceeding the nationwide fall over the same period, which averaged 2 points, and for being the veteran politician’s main electoral stronghold.
Lula’s approval in nine states in northeast Brazil this month, June, is 45%, according to IPEC, the highest approval rate achieved by a president in the entire country. But two months ago, in an IPEC poll in April, the proportion of those who thought Lula’s government was “good” or “great” was much higher, at 55%.
In last October’s presidential election, the Northeast was the only Brazilian region where Lula managed to defeat his opponent, Jair Bolsonaro. But the advantage in these states was so great, reaching 80% in some cases, that Lula managed to get elected, albeit with just over two million votes out of more than 150 million voters.
At the national level, there was also a drop in Lula’s approval, according to the released IPEC poll, but it was more cautious.
According to the institute, the president’s approval now stands at a national average of 37%, down two points from April’s 39%, even though it’s the lowest in the same period (six months). for his three terms.
The disapproval of a president who had shown himself strangely alienated from government and country, and who had suffered a losing streak in a highly conservative Congress, was, on average, in the same proportion as national approval. Lulu is now rejected by 28% of Brazilians compared to 26% who disapproved of him in April.
Only in the North and Midwest, where Jair Bolsonaro won an overwhelming majority in October, has Lula’s rejection soared over the past two months. It has risen from 21% in April to 33% now.
