FC Porto directors risk their freedom

Francisco J. Marquez and Diogo Faria are expected to find out on Monday whether their freedom is indeed under threat. Two directors linked to FC Porto – the first in charge of the club’s communications and the second in charge of running Porto’s channel – are facing prison terms for the crimes they are accused of, due to the distribution of emails from Benfica.

The verdict of the court of first instance was supposed to be known on March 27, but on that day the judges reported that some crimes had been aggravated. The second scheduled date (May 12) was also not met, the announcement of the verdict was postponed to this Monday.

Diogo Faria is charged with three offenses of aggravated breach of correspondence or telecommunications, co-authored with Francisco J. Marquez. Each of these crimes is punishable by imprisonment for up to one year and four months. Both bear equal responsibility for a crime against a legal entity. The communications director of FC Porto is also accused of three other crimes related to violation of the rules of correspondence or telecommunications.

The State Ministry has requested the conviction of the two directors, with the exception of Julio Magalhães, the third defendant in the case, who was the director of Porto Canal at the time of the disclosure of the Benfica emails.
