Former Scottish Prime Minister and former leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) Nicola Sturgeon has been released after questioning related to the party’s finances investigation. The former minister was arrested on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Associated Press news agency, Nicola Sturgeon has been “released without charge pending further investigation” as British police do not identify suspects until charges are filed.
The agency also clarifies that Sturgeon’s spokesperson said the ex-premier volunteered to be questioned by police and would cooperate with authorities in the investigation.
The Scottish National Party said it was “cooperating fully with the investigation” although “it is inappropriate to discuss any issues publicly while the investigation is ongoing”.
SNP’s finances have been a source of suspicion in recent years, largely due to complaints filed in 2021 about donations. In particular, there were questions about the funds the party received for a possible new referendum campaign for independence.
