Mexico City’s head of government, Claudia Scheinbaum, announced on Friday that she is resigning to run for president in the 2024 elections for the ruling National Renaissance Movement (Morena) party.
“Today [segunda-feira] I want to inform you that I have made the decision to retire permanently on June 16 to become the first woman in the history of Mexico to rule the destinies of the nation,” she wrote in a statement sent to the press on Monday.
Claudia Scheinbaum’s announcement came after Morena’s party, founded by current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced on Sunday that it would nominate a party-backed candidate on September 6 following opinion polls conducted from August 28 to September 3.
