Canada’s population has passed 40 million, according to Statistics Canada, the CBC reports June 16.
The 40 million milestone was reached almost at 3:00 pm ET on June 16. It should be noted that in 2022 the population of Canada grew by 1 million people, especially due to migration.
Currently, the population growth rate is 2.7% per year, the highest level since 1957, the “baby boom” period. Matti Siemiatitzky, director of the Institute for Infrastructure and a professor in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto, said that while this growth shows Canada’s attractiveness to migrants, it creates certain problems, particularly with housing.
“We are in a crisis. We are not building enough units across the country, especially at an affordable level.”he said, emphasizing that Canada urgently needs to build more housing.
Statistics Canada said that if current trends continue, the country’s population will reach 50 million by 2043.
