The European Union (EU) considered this Thursday that Ukraine, despite the war and repeated attacks from Russia, is moving towards opening negotiations on joining the bloc, and praised the reforms in various areas.
In an internal report that only looks at the changes countries need to make to start negotiations, EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi said Kiev had “completed” two of the seven steps in the areas of judiciary and “media” freedom, and registered ” good progress” in the reform of the Constitutional Court.
However, there has been only “some progress” in the fight against corruption, money laundering and the oligarchic system, and recommendations from the Council of Europe, the continent’s human rights body, are still needed for national minorities.
A full report from Brussels on Ukraine’s progress towards the official launch of the retention program is due in October. President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he intends to start these formal talks at the end of 2023. However, under the best circumstances, a few years are allotted for full integration into the communal bloc.
The EU has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters in the war against Russia, taking in millions of refugees and providing billions of euros in aid to Kyiv to avoid the country’s financial collapse.
Ukraine will only be able to join block 27 if it guarantees new and credible financial interventions from member states, manages to rebuild its economy and adapt to community standards.
The military offensive launched by Russia on February 24, 2022 in Ukraine has so far caused the flight of more than 14.7 million people – 6.5 million internally displaced persons and more than 8.2 million to European countries – from, according to the latest UN data , which classifies this migration crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).
The Russian invasion, justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security, was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing political and economic sanctions on Russia.
