The arrest of five people who tried to take a kilogram of radioactive cesium-137 out of Russia was carried out by FSB agents together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation on June 23, the department’s press service reports.
The FSB clarified that the criminal group was detained at the time of an attempted purchase of cesium-137. One kilogram of the dangerous substance was valued at $3.5 million.
It is clarified that the criminals intended to remove cesium from the territory “Russian Federation abroad for use to the detriment of Russian interests in the course of a special military operation”. The coordinator of the detainees turned out to be a citizen of Ukraine.
According to the FSB, the terrorists planned to use caesium-137 to discredit Russia through organized terrorist attacks with weapons of mass destruction. The department further reported that detainees give confessions.
