US lawmakers urge CIA to hold briefing on Chinese base in Cuba

US lawmakers urge CIA to hold briefing on Chinese base in Cuba

Michael McCall and Robert Menende, chairmen of the US House of Representatives and Senate Foreign Affairs committees, asked Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and CIA Director William Burns to hold a door-to-door briefing closed on a Chinese electronic intelligence base supposedly located in Cuba. This was announced on June 23 by McCall’s press service.

Lawmakers have issued a demand for greater transparency and clarity on the issue. They explained the request by the need to know the purpose of collecting information on the alleged Chinese electronic intelligence station operating on the island and the consequences for the national interests of the United States.

Likewise, representatives of the foreign policy committees of the Senate and Congress requested information on measures to counter this threat by the administration of US President Joe Biden.

McCall and Menendez requested a meeting no later than July 14.

There are 12 questions that need to be answered. They want the US Secretary of State and the CIA chief to name the specific location of the base and name the companies whose equipment is allegedly used there. The consequences of the operation of such an object, taking into account Cuba’s interaction with Russia and Iran in the field of defense and intelligence, are also included in the list of issues.

In early June, The Wall Street Journal reported on a Chinese intelligence facility in Cuba. It has been argued that information used by numerous military installations in the southeastern United States may become available to the Chinese team if it is deployed to the Caribbean island territory. At the same time, the coordinator of strategic communications of the National Security Council (NSC) of the White House, John Kirby, denounced the incorrectness of the published data.

But Kirby later said that Washington was taking steps to minimize the effectiveness of China’s base in Cuba.

In turn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba categorically denies the existence of such equipment on the Island and affirms that such accusations by Washington serve as an excuse for the illegal and unjust blockade that continues against the Republic.
