The European Commission will support 41 proposals totaling 832 million euros under the European Defense Fund, which aims to improve industrial and technological defense capabilities in the Union.
“The selected projects will contribute to the development of a new generation of defense capabilities in the European Union. [UE] in critical areas, namely naval, land, air, space and cyber,” the Commission said in a statement.
For example, in the naval area, the “E-NACSOS” (European Naval Operational Standard for Joint Surveillance) program will provide a joint air and missile defense system.
Another project, “Odin’s Eye II” (“Eye of Odin”, an allusion to the mythological figure of Odin, considered the main one in the pantheon of Scandinavian gods) will work for early warning of missile attacks and “integrates the industry of 14 EU member states and Norway to increase European potential in this area”.
The 41 proposals endorsed by Brussels are aimed at boosting the EU’s defense capability, which is a growing concern given Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the end of February last year.
Since then, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, a former German defense minister, has insisted on the need for 27 to be ready to face various threats and revive the defense industry, with a strong commitment to technological progress. .
