Ana Catarina Mendez says those who tried to shock the government with deeds have failed

The deputy minister for parliamentary affairs said on Tuesday that those who tried to shake the government’s confidence with deeds and “foam days” had failed, arguing that the socialist executive branch had not deviated from program goals.

Ana Catarina Méndez spoke at the closing session of the PS Parliament Days in Funchal, in a speech in which she also called for a relentless fight against racism and xenophobia and in which she named the reform of the law on professional orders a priority, ending the internships of young people without the right to any or reward.

On a purely political level, before the Socialist deputies, the Deputy Minister for Parliamentary Affairs stressed that “those who rely on the foam of days, those who believe that in one way or another they undermine the trust in the government and divert the government’s attention, have failed.”

“We do not deviate and continue to fulfill our obligations to the Portuguese, which gave us confidence in governing the country with an absolute majority in parliament,” he said.

In her speech, the minister referred to attempts to discredit the parliamentary debate and emphasized the “parliamentary majority group in the Assembly of the Republic, guaranteeing respect for institutions and diversity of opinion.”

“Even with the knowledge that we are the absolute majority, the government is not exempt from being in parliament to report, and the parliament is not exempt from monitoring the actions of the government. approved bills and resolutions [pelo PS] and it came from other parties,” he argued.

These data, according to the Deputy Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, reflect the concept of democracy of the socialist government.

“This is our concept of responsibility within the absolute majority, which the Portuguese trusted a year and a half ago,” he said.

In her speech, Ana Catarina Méndez mentioned that for years “there was talk of no alternatives to austerity”, after the financial crisis socialist governments had to respond to the covid-19 pandemic and the aftermath of the war. in Ukraine, which exacerbated inflation.

“They once again said that the devil would come, but we responded to people with higher wages and pensions, more support for companies and families. Stability and predictability – that’s what the Portuguese asked of us. and predictability, if we can respond strictly and responsibly to the demands of the moment,” he added.
