A report by press freedom NGO Misa denounces human rights-violating policies among three companies operating in the mobile sector in Mozambique.
The study assesses aspects related to corporate governance, free speech, information and privacy and notes the prevalence of “discrepancies in policy and transparency between parent companies and local operator subsidiaries” in Mozambique, namely Vodacom, Tmcel and Movitel.
“One example is the lack of transparency and commitment to human rights principles on the part of Vodacom, despite the fact that the parent company (Vodafone) has made such a commitment in the UK, its main headquarters,” the document indicates, although it emphasizes that the company has shown the best results in terms of policy, management and management control.
On the other hand, Misa continues, Movitel of the international Viettel group shows a lack of commitment to confidentiality and transparency, operating with impunity and no sense of billing, according to the study.
“Movitel also does not separate its governance and managerial oversight structures, reinforcing the perception of companies subject to government interference,” the report says.
The Misa report also indicates that Tmcel, a Mozambican public company, also does not provide information about its commitment to human rights, governance and governance oversight.
“The privacy policies of Tmcel and Vodacom undermine any efforts by companies to collect only necessary and limited data, as their products are capable of collecting more than just necessary information,” Misa said in a report.
Lusa has contacted three companies but has not received any statements yet.
More recent data from Mozambique’s National Institute of Communications showed that Vodacom has the largest share of the mobile data market with around six million customers, followed by Movitel with around four million and state-owned TMcel with just over three million customers. million customers.
