On Saturday morning, a fire broke out at the Maredeus fish freezing plant in Hermidas Sado, municipality of Santiago do Casem. The building was completely engulfed in flames, the smoke was visible for several kilometers.
The warning was issued around 9 am.
According to some witnesses, an explosion was heard before the flames spread. At this time, there was no one in the room.
At the moment, the fire is “under control” in one of the sectors of the plant and “active” in the second sector, work is being carried out “favorably”, the Alentejo Litoral Sub-Regional Office for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection revealed.
Five firefighters were involved in extinguishing the fire. Four firefighters were taken to the Litoral Alentejano Hospital in Santiago do Casem “due to bad mood”, according to a source from the Alentejo Litoral Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Defense Directorate.
“Because of the heat and exhaustion, another firefighter arrived on the scene,” he added.
A total of 45 vehicles and 120 firefighters from Alcácer do Sal, Aljustrel, Alvalade Sado, Beja, Castro Verde, Cercal do Alentejo, Ferreira do Alentejo, Grandola, Odemira, Urique, Santiago do Casem , Santo André and Vila Nova de Milfontes, in addition to the GNR and teams from the Port Authority of Sines and Algarve and the Lisbon Engineer Regiment.
